What Is a Veterinary License — And Why Does It Matter for Your Farm?

In the U.S., becoming a licensed veterinarian isn’t as simple as graduating from vet school and walking into a farm. It’s a rigorous process that ensures only highly qualified professionals are trusted to care for animals—and for good reason. First, an individual must graduate from an accredited veterinary school. While a few international schools meet the required standards, the majority are based right here in the United States. This ensures a consistent level of education and training across the board.

But graduation is just the beginning. Next comes the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE)—a comprehensive exam that every aspiring vet must pass. Without passing the NAVLE, a veterinary license cannot be issued in the U.S. Even then, there’s more. Licensing is state-specific, meaning veterinarians must apply for and be granted a license in each individual state where they plan to practice. In other words, holding a license in one state doesn’t automatically allow them to work in another.

At Wilson Vet Co, we take licensing seriously—because it directly impacts the level of service we can provide to your operation. We’re currently licensed in 29 states (and counting!).

What Is Veterinary Accreditation — And Why Does It Matter for Poultry Producers?

Once a veterinarian is licensed in a state, there’s another crucial step they can take to elevate their qualifications: USDA Veterinary Accreditation. This additional certification, issued by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), is especially important for veterinarians working with food-producing animals—like poultry.

There are two levels of USDA Accreditation:

  • Level 1 covers companion animals
  • Level 2 includes livestock  and poultry

To earn this accreditation, veterinarians must first be licensed in a particular state, then go through USDA training and approval. Importantly, they can only be accredited in states where they already hold an active veterinary license.

What Does USDA Level 2 Accreditation Enable?

Level2 Accreditation gives veterinarians the authority to act on behalf of the U.S. government in several critical areas, including:

  • Issuing import and export documentation
  • Approving interstate movement of poultry through NPIP
  • Signing official health certificates and regulatory documents

Without this accreditation, a vet cannot legally perform these services, even if they are licensed.

At Wilson Vet Co, we’re not just licensed in 29 states—we’re also USDA Level 2 Accredited in each of those states. That means we’re fully equipped to handle every aspect of poultry health and compliance, including regulatory paperwork, disease prevention, and interstate movements. When you work with Wilson Vet Co, you get more than just a veterinarian—you get a government-accredited partner who knows the ins and outs of poultry health, regulation, and logistics.
