Keeping backyard chickens can be incredibly rewarding—but like any pet, chickens can develop health problems that require prompt attention. Knowing what to look for can help you catch issues early and keep your flock happy and productive. Here are five of the most common chicken health concerns we see at our clinic, and how you can recognize the signs before they become serious.

1. Respiratory Infections

What to Look For: Sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge, swollen eyes, or a drop in egg production.
Why It Matters: Respiratory infections are highly contagious and can spread quickly through a flock. Early treatment is key to avoiding long-term damage or loss.

2. Parasites (Mites, Lice & Worms)

What to Look For: Feather loss, weight loss, pale combs, or seeing bugs crawling on the skin or around the vent.
Why It Matters: External and internal parasites can cause severe discomfort and health decline. Regular checks and coop sanitation go a long way toward prevention.

3. Egg Binding

What to Look For: A hen that’s lethargic, straining, or sitting in the nesting box for long periods without laying.
Why It Matters: An egg stuck inside the hen can become a life-threatening emergency. Time is of the essence if you notice these symptoms.

4. Bumblefoot

What to Look For: Swollen, warm, or scabby areas on the bottom of the foot. Chickens may limp or avoid walking.
Why It Matters: This bacterial infection can become serious if left untreated, and may require cleaning, soaking, or veterinary care.

5. Nutritional Deficiencies

What to Look For: Poor feather quality, slow growth, soft-shelled eggs, or reduced laying.
Why It Matters: Many issues stem from improper diet. Ensuring a balanced feed with adequate calcium, protein, and vitamins helps prevent problems before they start.
